2025-no resolutions, thank you.

I’m not a resolutions person.

I am a plan for the future kid, and this is really a new sensation for me. I have mostly been a very short-term person. the here and now and not the tomorrow. I always envied my former father-in-law his projects, the lay of the land before him full of details and items and jobs. But now, with time and more stability in my life and less self-isolation and protectionism? I’m beginning my own nuts and bolts things, trying to anyhow. Its all here: What do I want to feel in June? What do I want to say I did last year? What do I want for myself? And then I go from there.

My retreat is coming up, my four days in a cabin with my wood stove and my outhouse. It was a big item on the YEAR OF 50 LIST… There is a lamp, and a hot plate and I am ready to go. I just had two weeks off from school, with my kids mostly being at their dads. I didn’t like it, it was too much, but I never say no to his requests, ever, despite all the time that has passed. I’m looking forward to the day when my needs outweigh his, easily, automatically, without thought.

I worked at the farm and I missed the kids, and I spent a lot of time with Bob, who is healthy and walking forestgump style while he incorporates his new heart pieces into his body. Its a big difference to be working when the kids are all home, I do it all summer but winter really sits differently. I want to be home and full of hot chocolate and cookies and children. Bring on the fat snowflakes, dear, bring them.

The retreat is a big part of my ‘plan’. Time to cuddle myself, to consider only my very visceral needs, to be without clutter*, in all the ways. I’m bringing far too many books. I haven’t started packing, because it is a month away, but I have a clear vision of the bag I will need for the books and the papers and the paints. yes, color, bring it. and socks, warm socks, and a ridiculous hat.

*Today i wrote about clutter magic, and I think that is something real for me. the chaos being so damn appealing, and quite the obvious choice over sterility. if that is the binary.

I have a plant resting in the corner, the latest of the adoptions into the family, and it is resting atop three text books that the kids never returned to school. (I’m sorry, town.) It is chaos, yes, but it is beauty, and privilege, and probably a good use of those textbooks. I’m aware feng shui might not be satisfied.

but that’s not my monkey.

And its January 6, my friends, and so I’m going to wash the dishes and transform dirty to clean, lost in clutter magic… and hope that you’re dreaming a little too.

love you,

kate

so much

bob made it through an open heart episode. A surgery in which he was laid bare. Incredible things. He lived here for a month, poor babe. My former father in law died. I spent a lot of time with that family as they moved through the days. I had to stop doing that. My friend told me that i wasn’t grounded because i was a faerie, and what about that. and i went to quaker meeting today because my son led me back. there is earth and spirit everywhere you look.

i’ve been thinking in posts and wounding myself because i don’t write anymore, so here i am, while ducking another responsibility. I don’t know, maybe i’ll just never figure it all out. its birthday/holiday/too much time right now and i’m buckling in and down and hiding behind bob’s right arm pretty regularly. just get through it. dirt and air.

its very windy. i have brussels sprouts waiting for me in the fridge. i am making hamburger helper tonight, poor children. (your mother needs comfort food.) i’ve stopped eating bags and bags of candy and it is so good, but i am full of craven craves. Also, the whole heart thing means a whole never ever approach to cigarettes, which are a very bad but enjoyable reprieve from clean air and responsibility.

things are stirred up, dust and ash, and I’m glancing out, with my hair in Viking braids, either waiting to kill something, or maybe just yell into the wind. but there is blood in my mouth, and i don’t know what that means.

see? so much.

love you, and have missed you.

its sunday. books and bob.

i’m home. all of my kids are here. my man bob is here, and he is recovering. (Everything went as expected and the crisis is just now losing its bubbling simmer.) There is a fire going and i have two days off in a row, plus more to come. recovery will be slow, and then leap, and then slow again. i’m glad the week of hospital is over, and he and i will have the opportunity to out-stubborn each other over and over again in the next weeks. how many times per hour do you think i can ask what his pain level is? or offer him drinks? food? we will see. i’m overly skilled at obsequiousness.

but also this:

i’ve had more time off in the past week than i usually do, because i have asked for it, and needed it, sometimes to go to the ICU, sometimes to get gift cards for nurses, and I think i’ve fallen into the woolf-y world of recognizing how much my creative brain needs more space. just having some mornings to myself this week has sent me to books, to writing. just two mornings, and the space – the space has been full, and my heart and anxiety fully engaged in another, but really, deeply, I have appreciated it. (only the space, not one other aspect. not one.) the ability to dither, to think, to idly spin in the kitchen.

I listened to Pride and Prejudice in my drives this past two weeks. I’ve also hit up a bunch of Agatha Christie. I listened to one audio detective type series which took place in the US, with an American protagonist, but it was read by a British reader, and the words were pronounced in British format and it made me insane. INSANE. Also, the Grass Harp. so beautiful, and a tree in a house and an escape. You’ll see. I set myself the task of fifty books this year, my fiftieth, and there is no way I will make it. But I’m still reading much more than I have been, so I’m thankful for the impulse.

and this:

One of the things on my list for my fiftieth year was a getaway for myself, and I booked it before all this stuff with Bob, and now I know how much I will need it. See? February, four days in a cabin stoking a woodstove and using an outhouse. There is electricity and a tiny kitchenette. Me and me. four days.

In some ways I do think I will come back different. less tied to my device, more settled in ways that are from my past, i’ll be so happy to see everyone when I get back. I’m moderately thrilled about it. I’ll add some more books to my list, I am sure. And I’ll bring plenty of socks and sweaters.

But that is not until February. And there is a whole lot that will happen between now and then, and I’m here for it, and glad of it.

love you guys,

me.

so.

my man is going in for coronary artery bypass tomorrow. that’s no joke, right?

Same hospital, same floor that I was on ten years ago with my father. the emotions are too many and so strange and i’ve said things out loud like, ‘when did i get married? am i fucking married again? when/how did this happen? what do i actually fucking do? what if he dies? i will fucking kill him. Can i just lie in the bed with him? ‘

no, i’m not married but boy, the love, attention and life pivot is the same, and i have been shocked to realize i’m here. Everything has been put down. Hands free.

i’ve not written a single word in two weeks. and thats not even because of hearts. sent a postcard to my ailing father-in-law but that doesn’t count.

got my mother her christmas present. it’s still in the car. hope its allright. its a giant beaded giraffe. don’t tell her.

my work people are good, if not great. and i’m lucky. but i’m an hourly worker so every time i have to go to the hospital, i’m hurting my own finances and boy, that’s a bitch and a half. don’t worry, my sister threatens to send me money all the time. which is also a bitch. (yes, i love you dearly and appreciate the kindness, anne. truly.)

Its one of those times when you look around and wonder how people are going about their daily lives. and because i’m in a serious branch of the hospital, i know there is a lot worse going on, and still, I’m in the serious branch of the hospital. very sober.

he’s okay. his spirits are good. but man, this is a fucking big deal. and I’m tired. he’s way more tired.

working 7-5 three days a week and other hours all the other days except sunday, and nights at the hospital this week plus emotional tomfoolery. i don’t feel like i’ve seen my kids this week. and its true, i haven’t. just minutes per day.

i watched my college kid play rugby yesterday. i had no idea what was going on but he got a touchdown. if its called that. my man made me go and i’m very glad i did.

I’m not complaining as much as I am sharing. just getting it out on paper so that I’ll remember it later.

Yes, this is about right.

Farm

I don’t think it’s just me, but I’ve hit the wall (and climbed it) of apocalyptic thoughts, feelings and mind lapses. I’m mostly happy about it, the theatrical world knows my connection to the fears we all have right now. Which, in itself, is a whole post.

I’m thrilled by all the movies/series which suit me right now. Last of Us. Any Walking Dead. A million more i can’t think of right now.

But man, one of the weirdest things I keep thinking about is farming.

I’m aging out of the work a little bit; the heat is too hot, the baskets too heavy, the monetary payment is too light. (It’s time to get into serious retirement discussions, selling the house cannot be my entire plan. It cannot.)

But I’ve been wafting back and forth in my apocalysm daydreams, while seeding hundreds of baby things, wondering how future generations will know how to get broccoli. I mean, food is the most important thing, right? Food and water. And, will the home gardeners save us all? Really? Better get out those zucchini recipes.

When we finally decide to stop flying produce from country to country, or spraying it with shit to slow down the ripening, or to speed it up, as the case warrants, what then?

Will ‘we’ tolerate not having bananas? Will i be able to grow bananas in New England?

I know, i know, focus on the here and now. Be mindful, be present. And all that is true, and yes, my small world is all that i can control.

When my sons want to eat meat at every meal and I feel such exhaustion that i throw frozen meat patties on a grill again and again, its that whole butterfly wing again, and I’m upset also that its such a recurring thing in my brain and yet millions of millionaires exist and I don’t think they are wrapped up in tinfoil about this.

I suppose they’ll get the last bananas.

Sigh.

Tell me I’m wrong. About the bananas, I mean.

-love love.
